Herbalism has a long tradition of use outside conventional medicine. This powerful form of medicine has been utilized for thousands of years by many cultures around the globe, and is in fact the origin of many pharmaceutical drugs today. It is becoming more mainstream as improvements in analysis and quality control along with advances in clinical research show the value of herbal medicine in treating and preventing disease. Herbal preparations are commonly used in the form of liquid extracts, tablets or teas.
TCM & Acupuncture
Traditional Chinese medicine is based on the principle that good health is dependent on the smooth flow of Qi (pronounced “chi”), along the body’s internal energy pathways (meridians). Health concerns arise due to patterns of disharmony and energy blockages which must be identified and restored. TCM employs a variety of therapeutic tools including acupuncture, herbs, cupping & moxibustion. Acupuncture is the stimulation of points along the energy meridians with very thin and sterile needles to help remove energy blockages and hence improve organ function and restore health.
Hydrotherapy
The origins of Naturopathic Medicine began with the use of different temperature waters applied to the body in various durations and frequencies to heal many diseases. Today Hydrotherapy is mainly used in physical therapy for pain relief and to treat many musculoskeletal conditions. Naturopathic Doctors use Hydrotherapy even further to modulate the immune and lymphatic systems, and to rejuvinate and recharge the metabolism just to name a few.
Lifestyle modification
The environment we live in and our lifestyle has a significant impact on our health. Having extremes of lifestyle, sleeping very little, not being able to manage stress well, eating irregularly, smoking, drinking, not moving enough all impact our health to a certain degree. We will identify which area of a person’s lifestyle is making the biggest impact on their health and work on improving it gradually to reach a new balance.
Counselling
Mental attitudes and emotional states are also important elements in healing and disease. Emotional health and physical health are interdependant. Addressing all aspects of a person's life, identifying and addressing the impact that stress and life events have on a patient's health is an important aspect of naturopathic treatment.
